LEADERSHIP DEFINED as Process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing PURPOSE, DIRECTION, and MOTIVATION.
THE FACTORS OF LEADERSHIP:
• The LED “Create a climate that encourages active participation of subordinates.”
SUBORDINATES THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR LEADING
SHOULD NOT BE LED IN THE SAME WAY
• Newbies vs. experienced
• Low confidence - support and encouragement
• Hardworkers - deserve a praise
• Intentional failures - reprimand and punishment
• The LEADER “Leaders must continuously ensure that each subordinate is treated with dignity and respect.”
MUST HONESTLY UNDERSTAND:
• Who you are
• What you know
• What you can do
MUST KNOW:
• Strengths
• Weaknesses
• Capabilities
• Limitations
• The SITUATION “When committing a mistake, analyze the situation again, take corrective action, and move on.”
ALL SITUATIONS ARE DIFFERENT
• Consider the availability of:

• Personnel
• Environment
• Training
• Consider the subordinates’ level of:
• Competence
• Motivation
• Commitment
• Consider the timing of actions
• Timely confrontation of subordinate
• COMMUNICATION “The ability to say the correct thing, at the appropriate moment and in the right way, is an important part of leadership.”

• Recognize that you communicate standards by your example and by what behaviors you ignore, reward, and punish
• Important to communicate on different situation
• Choice of words
• Tone of voice

TIPS TO HELP YOU PARTICIPATE;
• Don’t grab a conversation by saying, “Yes, now take me for instance
• Don’t let your gaze wander from the other person’s face except momentarily
• Validate the feelings of the other person by saying, “Yes, I see what you mean…”
• It should come from the heart
• Don’t interrupt.
• Don’t try to top the other person’s story or joke.
• Don’t criticize
• Ask appropriate questions about what the other person is saying.
• Don’t argue.

Personal manner and approach in leading. It is the way leaders directly interact with their subordinates
• Manner and approach of leading will obviously depend on training, education experience, and view of the world
• Leaders have to be himself, yet flexible enough to adjust to the people they lead and to the missions they are assigned
• Tells subordinates what he wants done, how he wants it done, where he wants it done, and when he wants it done and then supervises closely to ensure they follow his directions
• Time is short and the leader alone knows what needs to be done and how to do it
• When leading subordinates who lack experience or competence at a task
• INVOLVES SUBORDINATES IN DETERMINING WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT
• Asks information and recommendations but still takes the decision
• Appropriate for subordinates with competence and who support your goal
• Can be a powerful team-building tool
• Delegates problem-solving and decision-making authority to a subordinate or to a group of subordinates
• Appropriate FOR mature subordinates who supports the leader’s goals and are competent and motivated to perform the task delegated.
